Today, about 10 per cent of people living with HIV in Australia are women, yet they continue to be relatively invisible in the HIV prevention message. As a heterosexual woman living with HIV for the past 21 years, I am acutely aware today that the experience of women with HIV is still mired in ignorance and invisibility.

The 23rd annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) recently took place in Boston, Massachusetts 22-25 February 2016. CROI is arguably the world’s most prestigious HIV scientific get-together and the program content is reflective of that ranking.

Minister, members of Parliament, distinguished guests, people living with HIV, sector colleagues. World AIDS Day is a difficult day for many of us. It’s a day tinged with sadness, regret, loss and mixed emotions. We wonder what our lives would have been like if HIV/AIDS hadn’t come along.
