Julie Bates is a sex worker rights activist and law reform lobbyist. She played a leading role in consolidation of Australia’s early response to HIV/AIDS. As a founding member of both the Australian Prostitutes Collective NSW (forerunner of the Sex Workers Outreach Project NSW (SWOP)) and the NUAA, she served on the Australian National Council on AIDS and contributed to the first National HIV/AIDS Strategy. In 2018, Julie was awarded an Order of Australia for her advocacy for sex workers and other marginalised Australians.
