American physician-scientist and immunologist Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and chief medical advisor to seven American presidents, gave the inaugural Professor David Cooper lecture on 14 April 2021, in discussion with Tegan Taylor, co-host of the ABC’s Coronacast, to talk about the past, the present and the future: from what we learned from the HIV/AIDS epidemic to what the ongoing impact of COVID-19 will be.

At NIAID, Dr Fauci oversees an extensive research portfolio focused on infectious and immune-mediated diseases and retains his 40-year involvement with HIV research. Dr Fauci attended the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne in 2014 at the invitation of Professor David Cooper, the founding director of the Kirby Institute (previously known as the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research). Professor Cooper was an internationally renowned research scientist and HIV clinician who is remembered warmly by his colleagues in Australia and abroad, and by his many patients from St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. He died in 2018.
